Visualization Exercises: The Key To Your Success
How many times have you started an exercise program vowing that “this time I am really going to stick with it”? Maybe this is your first quest for fitness, or perhaps you are beginning again.Either way, if you are like most people, you will jump right into your program without giving much thought to what it is you want to achieve. And if there is some thought given, it is often too vague to have any real impact. If you ask the average person why they have started to exercise, they’ll likely say, “I want to lose some weight.” Or you might hear, “I have to get in shape.” Neither of these reasons could pass as a goal and therefore are unlikely to motivate them beyond a few days or possibly a week. Whatever reasons you may have for improving you fitness level, the key to your success resides between your ears. This is true because, as I teach in my book S.M.A.R.T. F.I.T.T.NESS, specifically in CHAPTER 1, "S.M.A.R.T. GOALS", when you condition your mind, your body will follow.
Remember these two undeniable facts:1. Your subconscious mind (internal computer) does not know the difference between an actual and imagined experience.2. You become what you think about. When you set your goals, make sure to set big ones as big goals motivate. If your goals are not big enough, there may not be enough reasons why to keep you going. As a leading self improvement expert, Jim Rohn says, “When the why gets bigger, the how gets easier.”
Setting big goals can be intimidating. To overcome your fear, think of the age old adage, “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer is “one bite at a time.” When you think of the entire task your goal represents, it looks huge; however, when you break it up into smaller, “bite sized” pieces, it becomes more manageable.
I have often stated, "Goal setting is one of the most powerful tools you will ever use in your life." And while this is true, without the use of visualization your goals will be useless. If you cannot see your desired self in your mind’s eye (imagination), then the habits necessary to move from your current to your desired condition will be inhibited.
